Well now you can get a much better idea by taking a look at this video which shows lots of different bullet impacts in slow motion as taken by a camera taking 1 million frames per second to capture the precise detail of what happens when bullets hit things.

Definitely an interesting video to take a look at and makes you realise just how much bullets can deform on impact, some look like they are just melting due to the force at which they are being propelled into an object.
