Stargate Universe is the second spin-off show from the highly successful Stargate SG-1 series which itself was the follow-up to the 1994 Stargate movie, however this show is different, quite different!

While the Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis were action-orientated and quite light-hearted at times, Universe seems to have broken with what seemed a fairly winning formula and seems to have been highly influenced by the recent successful character-driven shows such as Lost and Battlestar Galactica – however the big question is whether it will work for the Stargate Universe?

It’s tough to say from what we’ve seen so far as it is fairly dark and gritty as a show, but having seen the first 10 episodes so far, it’s also a fairly slow-moving show, so all of that has mean that a lot of the established Stargate fans aren’t liking it (perhaps made worse since Atlantis was cancelled last year so the production team could focus on this show, maybe there’s still some resentment there over that) and ratings haven’t been great, but it’s still got half of its first season still to go and has already been re-newed for a second season, so hopefully the show will find its feet as I’m sure it does have potential.
